Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN DARTS (71) I, BRIAN BROOKS, a British Subject of 36 Bowring Close, Liverpool 8, Merseyside, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to darts.
Known darts, for playing the game of darts, comprise a barrel with an integral or permanently attached point, and a flight in screw threaded engagement with the barrel. Whilst it is possible to replace a damaged flight it is not easily possible to replace a damaged point and usually the whole dart or at least the barrel point combination must be replaced at some considerable expense.
It is an object ofthe present invention to provide a dart in which the point is replaceable, and which reduces the likelihood of the dart rebounding dangerously and the risk of damaging the point of the dart.
According to the present invention there is provided a dart comprising a barrel member, a flight at one end thereof, appoint member at the other end thereof, and a resilient element within the barrel interposed between one end of the flight and the rear end of the point member, the point member being held by the barrel member and being adapted for releasable detachment therefrom, and the resilient element allowing resisted axial displacement of the point member in one direction.
The point member may have a portion held within the barrel member and be removable therefrom.
The portion of the point member within the barrel member may be tapered, at least in part, to fit within a correspondingly shaped bore within the barrel member, thereby preventing displacement of the point member in the other axial direction. Also or alternatively the portion of the point member may have a shoulder adapted to abut against a corresponding shoulder of the bore of the barrel member.
An end of the resilient member may abut against a threaded portion of the flight screwed into a corresponding threaded portion of the barrel member. The resilient element may be a spring. The point may be detachably held by the barrel member by, for example, clip means in which a resilient ring or spring ring in a groove in the bore- of the barrel holds the point member in abutting engagement with the wall of the bore and the resilient element by preventing axial displacement of the point member in the other direction within the bore.
The invention will hereinafter be further described by way of example with reference to the drawing accompanying the Provisional Specification which shows in partial section a dart constructed in accordance with the present invention.
The dart comprises a barrel 10, a point 12 and a flight 14. The point 12 is partially housed within a bore 16 and has a tip portion 18 extending out of the bore. A shoulder 20 of the part of the point housed within the bore 16 abuts against a correspondingly shaped rim 22 formed at the junction between a narrow part 24 and a wide part 26 of the bore 16. A spring 28 is disposed in the wide part 26 of the bore 16 between the point 12 and the flight 14. The flight 14 has a screw threaded neck 30 screwed into a screw threaded bore 32 of the barrel 10.
The spring 28 abuts, at one end, against the neck 30 and at the other end against the point 12 thereby urging the shoulder 20 of the point into contact with the rim 22 of the bore 16 of the barrel 10.
When in use, the spring 28 acts as a shock absorber and allows resiliently resisted axial displacement of the point 18 on impact with a dart board, and thus reduces the risk of a dart rebounding dangersouly when, for example, striking a dividing wire on the board. The risk of damaging the sharp end of the tip 18 is also reduced. When, however, such damage does occur the point 12 may be removed from the barrel, after first unscrewing flight 14 and removing spring 28, and replaced by a new point.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A dart comprising a barrel member, a flight at one end thereof, a point member at the other end thereof, and a resilient element within the barrel interposed between one end of the flight and the rear end of the point member, the point member being held by the barrel member and being adapted for releasable detachment therefrom, and the resilient element allowing resisted axial displacement of the point member in one direction.

Known darts, for playing the game of darts, comprise a barrel with an integral or permanently attached point, and a flight in screw threaded engagement with the barrel. Whilst it is possible to replace a damaged flight it is not easily possible to replace a damaged point and usually the whole dart or at least the barrel point combination must be replaced at some considerable expense. It is an object ofthe present invention to provide a dart in which the point is replaceable, and which reduces the likelihood of the dart rebounding dangerously and the risk of damaging the point of the dart. According to the present invention there is provided a dart comprising a barrel member, a flight at one end thereof, appoint member at the other end thereof, and a resilient element within the barrel interposed between one end of the flight and the rear end of the point member, the point member being held by the barrel member and being adapted for releasable detachment therefrom, and the resilient element allowing resisted axial displacement of the point member in one direction. The point member may have a portion held within the barrel member and be removable therefrom. The portion of the point member within the barrel member may be tapered, at least in part, to fit within a correspondingly shaped bore within the barrel member, thereby preventing displacement of the point member in the other axial direction. Also or alternatively the portion of the point member may have a shoulder adapted to abut against a corresponding shoulder of the bore of the barrel member. An end of the resilient member may abut against a threaded portion of the flight screwed into a corresponding threaded portion of the barrel member. The resilient element may be a spring. The point may be detachably held by the barrel member by, for example, clip means in which a resilient ring or spring ring in a groove in the bore- of the barrel holds the point member in abutting engagement with the wall of the bore and the resilient element by preventing axial displacement of the point member in the other direction within the bore. The invention will hereinafter be further described by way of example with reference to the drawing accompanying the Provisional Specification which shows in partial section a dart constructed in accordance with the present invention. The dart comprises a barrel 10, a point 12 and a flight 14. The point 12 is partially housed within a bore 16 and has a tip portion 18 extending out of the bore. A shoulder 20 of the part of the point housed within the bore 16 abuts against a correspondingly shaped rim 22 formed at the junction between a narrow part 24 and a wide part 26 of the bore 16. A spring 28 is disposed in the wide part 26 of the bore 16 between the point 12 and the flight 14. The flight 14 has a screw threaded neck 30 screwed into a screw threaded bore 32 of the barrel 10. The spring 28 abuts, at one end, against the neck 30 and at the other end against the point 12 thereby urging the shoulder 20 of the point into contact with the rim 22 of the bore 16 of the barrel 10. When in use, the spring 28 acts as a shock absorber and allows resiliently resisted axial displacement of the point 18 on impact with a dart board, and thus reduces the risk of a dart rebounding dangersouly when, for example, striking a dividing wire on the board. The risk of damaging the sharp end of the tip 18 is also reduced. When, however, such damage does occur the point 12 may be removed from the barrel, after first unscrewing flight 14 and removing spring 28, and replaced by a new point. WHAT I CLAIM IS:
1. A dart comprising a barrel member, a flight at one end thereof, a point member at the other end thereof, and a resilient element within the barrel interposed between one end of the flight and the rear end of the point member, the point member being held by the barrel member and being adapted for releasable detachment therefrom, and the resilient element allowing resisted axial displacement of the point member in one direction.
2. A dart as claimed in Claim 1 in which a- portion of the point member is held within the barrel member and is removable therefrom.
3. A dart as claimed in Claim 2 in which the portion of the point member is disposed within a bore of the barrel member.
4. A dart as claimed in Claim 3 in which the portion of the point member is tapered, at least in part, to fit within the bore which is provided with a corresponding taper.
5. A dart as claimed in Claim 3 or 4 in which the position of the point member is provided with a shoulder adapted to abut against a corresponding shoulder of the bore of the barrel member.
6. A dart as claimed in any preceding claim in which one end of the resilient element abuts against a threaded portion of the flight screwed into a corresponding threaded portion of the barrel member.
7. A dart as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 6 in which the resilient element is a spring.
8. A dart as claimed in any preceding claim in which the point member may be detaachably held by the barrel by clip means in which a resilient ring or spring ring in a groove in the bore of the barrel holds the point member in abutting engagement with the wall of the bore and the resilient element by preventing axial Gisplacement of the point member in the other direction within the bore.
9. A dart constructed, arranged and adapted to operate substantially as hereinbefore particularly described with reference to and as illustrated in the drawing accompanying the Provisional Specification.
