Abstract

1290111 Limb brace I F CASTIGLIA 1 Jan 1971 116/71 Heading A5R A brace for restricting a deformed knee joint or elbow joint to swinging movement about a single axis comprises two components 12 and 14 for engagement with the inside of the leg (or arm) above and below the joint respectively, and a pair of arms 16 and 18 extending from the respective components and pivotally interconnected at the said single axis. A joint engaging member 40 for contact with the outside of the leg (or arm) is connected to the components 12 and 14 by stiff curved members 36 and 34, the ends of which are mutually pivotable about a pin 46 at the said single axis, and about which the joint engaging member 40 is also pivotable. The arms 16 and 18 and member 40 are coated with a soft yieldable covering. The brace is attached to the leg by means of bands of elastic webbing (60) and (66) (Fig. 8 not shown) connected to the components (12) and (14) respectively, which are wound around the respective parts of the leg and fastened by complementary hook and pile fasteners. An end (66b) of the strap (66) is adapted to be wound spirally around the leg and fastened to the other strap (60) by means of the hook and pile fasteners. Further straps (80) and (82) are attached to the joint engaging member 40 and are secured to the leg by buckles.
