Abstract

1290106 Fluid blast circuit breakers MERLIN GERIN 6 July 1970 [7 July 1969 1 Aug 1969] 32702/70 Heading H1N A polyphase puffer type fluid blast circuit breaker has the respective exhaust compartments of each phase interconnected so as to increase the volume of space into which the fluid blast can flow. A three phase circuit breaker has compartments 49, 53, 55 defined by an insulating plate 47, and a piston 48, the latter mounted on a contact 40 and slidable so as to compress the fluid, e.g. SF 6 within compartment 53 and force it through orifice 50 to extinguish the arc. The fluid also passes through the hollow contact rod 40 into compartment 49 and through passages 70 into the corresponding compartments 55 of the other phases. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the phase units are in separate housings but have common reservoir for the fluid blast flow. In Figs. 6 and 8 (not shown) the puffer piston slides along a cylinder inserted within the enclosure. Recesses formed between the cylinder and the walls of the enclosure provide inter-compartment connection thus enabling the contact rod to be solid. In Fig. 9 (not shown) these recesses are provided in the moulding of the enclosure itself. The puffer type circuit breaker may utilize a pressure reduction to produce the fluid blast, in which case the "upstream" compartments of the phase enclosures are interconnected.
