1289619 Shaping wood J R CLAYTON 19 April 1971 [25 Feb 1970] 8987/70 Heading B5L A method of forming a scalloped surface on wood comprises feeding the wood past a cutter and oscillating the wood in a direction normal to its feed direction and towards and away from the cutter by a cam located in advance of the cutter with regard to the feed direction. In an apparatus for performing the method a piece of wood 2 is fed via a roller 12 to the nip between a knurled, eccentrically mounted, roller 6 and one of a pair of spring urged driven rollers 5. The rollers 5 press the wood against a guide surface 3 and against the roller 6 to rotate the latter and so cause the wood to oscillate toward and away from a rotary cutter 7. In alternative constructions the eccentric roller is driven and the wood pressed thereagainst by a spring-loaded jockey roller or by hand, or the wood is fed by hand past a non- driven eccentric roller. The wood may be passed through the machine more than once to produce superimposed scallops. In a preferred method the cutter is less than the width of the wood and the wood is fed past the cutter twice to form a series of scallops adjacent each of its two opposite long edges, the series being staggered. The cutter may be a fixed blade.
