Feeding and registering webs. -- In apparatus for feeding strips of material intermittently in printing, stamping, vending, stampaffixing, and other machines, the strip is fed by two cooperating rollers, the time during which they cooperate being varied so as to alter the length of strip fed at each operation of the machine, by rotatably adjusting the whole of one of the rollers or of a cam controlling it, relatively to the shaft on which the roller or cam is mounted. In one form, Fig. 3, the strip is fed by two rollers 1, 2 having segmental feeding portions 3, 4, the upper roller being angularly adjustable so that a part only or the whole of the portions 3, 4 co-operate to feed the strip. This adjustment is effected by the rotation of a graduated disc 7 fixed to the disc 1 by a sleeve 6 and adapted to be clamped in adjusted position to a crank handle 9 on the shaft 8 of the roller 1. Accurate positioning of the strip between each feed movement may be effected by pawls 16 operated by an eccentric 18 on the shaft 8 and engaging perforations, notches, or ridges in the strip. In another form, Fig. 4, the strip is fed by a pair of feed rollers 22, 23, carried by pivoted arms actuated by cams 25, 26 which are relatively adjustable to vary the period during which the rollers 22, 23 are simultaneously in contact with the web.
