Abstract

1289471 Collapsible steering columns CAM GEARS Ltd 17 Sept 1969 [23 Sept 1968 4 March 1969] 44993/68 and 11433/69 Heading B7H A collapsible steering column comprises two co-axial elements interconnected by coupling means which are such as to fail by shearing under predetermined axial loading, telescopic collapse of the two elements relative to one another being accompanied by expenditure of energy by virtue of irreversible deformation of one element by the other during telescoping, the one element being tubular and the other of polygonal transverse section. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) torque-transmitting elements 1, 2 are interconnected by a hollow sleeve 12 having peripheral holes 12A. An end portion of element 1 has a domed surface 15, an adjacent annular groove 12B positioned radially inwardly of the holes 12A, and a portion 14 of square shape. The edges of portion 14 are sharp and the length of an edge of portion 14 is greater than the diameter of element 2. Plastics material is injection moulded into holes 12A and groove 12B to form coupling means which are such as to fail by shearing under predetermined axial loading of elements 1, 2. During telescopic collapse of element 1 into element 2 the edges of portion 14 cut or otherwise deform the element 2 thereby expending energy. The elements used need not be enclosed, but may be enclosed in telescopic tubes 3, 4 interconnected by injection moulding plastics material through holes 9 and into a channel 8. In another embodiment (not shown), the torque-transmitting elements may merely be keyed together, the shearing and energy-expending functions being provided by telescoping of the outer tubes 3, 4. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) a hollow torquetransmitting element (36) contains a drilled collar (37), plastics material having been injection moulded through the holes of the collar and into an annular groove in the second torque-transmitting element (39) whose end portion (38) is formed with a square or other polygonal-section. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,190,066.
