Abstract

1288821 Potassium azide; alkali metal carbonates PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 26 March 1970 [27 March 1969] 14636/70 Heading C1A Potassium azide is obtained by crystallization from a solution containing significant quantities (which term is defined) of Na<SP>+</SP>, K<SP>+</SP>, N 3 -, and CO 3 =. In the illustrated cyclic process a liquor in line 2 containing said ions passes to vessel 1 and associated cooling means 6 where the potassium azide is precipitated by cooling and also by removal of water from vapour head 10 at the low temperature. KN 3 is separated from the slurry in centrifuge 16 and dried 22. The mother liquor is then heated 26 and to it is added a solution of K 2 CO 3 , NaN 3 and H 2 O containing salts in amounts equivalent to the amount of KN 3 precipitated. Water is heated 38 and evaporated from vapour head 40 and Na 2 CO 3 .H 2 O then crystallizes out in vessel 34. This salt is separated off in centrifuge 48, washed if so desired and dried 59, the mother liquor is then recycled to crystallizer 1 via line 2.
