Abstract
1288552 Preventing scale formation; co- agulating particles in a liquid by a self induced emf D A WOODHOUSE 5 Sept 1969 [20 Sept 1968 10 June 1969] 44775/68 and 29204/69 Headings C7B and C7E The deposition of solids e.g. scale from a liquid flowing through or around a conduit is controlled by creating a self induced EMF in a section of the conduit to alter the Zeta potential of the particles or ions in the liquid. As shown in the Figure a section of Cu conduit 20 is replaced by a stainless steel section 21 which is packed with stainless steel wire. The Cu and steel tubes are connected via end insulators 23 and in an external circuit containing resistor 24. Alternatively conduit 20 may be stainless steel and section 21 and wire 22 may be Cu. The system is used to deposit scale from domestic hard water or gels from fuel oil.
