In a system in which liquid is pumped through a pipe a spinner 8, mounted in a transparent section 9 of the pipe 1, is located behind vanes 4 which impart a swirling motion to the passing fluid, which will rotate the spinner 8 when the fluid is a liquid but not when the fluid is a gas such as air. The two surfaces of the spinner 8 may be of different colours to make rotation more noticeable.
