1287773 Abrasive tools ENGIS Ltd 15 Jan 1971 [17 Oct 1969] 51148/69 Heading B3D A lap comprises a plate 10 of composite ceramic material having a number of inserts 18 of an abrasive material supported in a composite ceramic material and embedded in the plate to provide it with an abrasive bearing face. The composite ceramic material of the plate may be powdered Al 2 O 3 bonded in advanced synthetic epoxy resin and is cast as a disc in a mould having a number of inserts which upon removal provide passages having an enlarged end and a stem. Both sides of the disc are faced and a flat plate coated with a release agent is placed against the face of the disc having the enlarged ends of the passages. The enlarged ends are filled with a liquid mixture of composite ceramic and powdered diamond or cubic boron nitride and, while the mixture is still liquid, the stems are filled with liquid ceramic material having a higher proportion of ceramic particles than that of the disc, the disc then being cured and the plate removed. The rear face of the disc is then ground or turned and the disc bonded to a backing plate 19. In another embodiment, the inserts comprise laminae, such as discs.
