Abstract

128,770. Mayrow, J. J. July 16, 1918. Framework; planes, arrangement and construction of. - The framework of wings, aerofoils, &c. is composed of obliquelyarranged ribs and connected spars forming a series of triangles. The spars are parallel, or nearly so, with the front edge of the wing, and the ribs and spars are secured together by plates 10, Fig. 13, at their crossing or meeting points and have front, rear, and side edge connexions, internal wiring being dispensed with. The ribs may be made from short lengths, Figs. 1 and 2, joined together, the meeting ends 8 being bent and shaped, and the ribs also having recesses 7 for the channel spars. The ribs may be V-shaped with centre portions riveted together, and may consist of channels 20, Fig. 27, and angle-irons 21 with distance-pieces 22, the spars in this case consisting cf U-members 18 and oblique distancepieces 19. The spars may also consist of channelled metal, Fig. 15, apertured at 15 for lightness and at 16 to receive the ribs, and provided with strengthening-plates 17. Stretchers or supports of tape or metal are provided for the fabric at the open parts between the ribs and spars. Attachment to the struts is provided by the plate 25, Fig. 9, formed to fit and secured to the ribs, spars, and rods, the plate also transmitting stresses. Plates 13, Fig. 11, are secured to the aileron and to the wing, and connected by a transverse pin acting as a hinge-pin.
