Abstract

364,534. Aircraft wing structures. MESSERSCHMITT, W., 118A, Haunstetterstrasse, Augsburg, Germany. Aug. 25, 1930, No. 25290. Convention date, Aug. 23, 1929. [Class 4.] A single spar wing comprises pairs of oppositely inclined ribs or pairs of oppositely inclined plane skeleton structures formed of rods or struts, mounted on and converging from the main spar so as to form substantially pyramidal structures extending in either or both directions from the main spar, the ribs or skeleton structures of each pair contacting at the leading edge or trailing edge of the wing and the points of contact being connected together to form a structure resistant to torsion. Ribs b, Fig. 1, connected to the single spar a are inclined to the direction of flight in pairs and are joined at the leading and trailing edges thus forming with the outer covering pyramidal structures, the apices of which are connected to longitudinal braces c. In a modification, Fig. 2, the pyramidal structures are formed from struts d or wires if the stress is purely tensional, and the ribs may be arranged as shown or/and placed between the pyramids. One brace c may be of deep section shaped to the contour of the leading edge thereby partially replacing the outer covering. In a further modification the apices of the pyramids may be formed by the outer covering which overlaps at these connections and is stiffened by a plate or girder.
