Abstract

1287306 Cooling whilst blending BAKER PERKINS Inc 11 Dec 1969 [12 Dec 1968] 60533/69 Heading B1C [Also in Divisions Cl and F4] A method of cooling a mass, e.g. a carbonaceous particle-pitch mass, whilst blending it comprises introducing a liquid coolant into the mass, keeping the mass under a pressure sufficient to prevent vaporisation of the liquid coolant while blending the latter with the mass and passing the blended mass to a region of lower pressure so that the liquid coolant vaporises and thereby reduces the temperature of the mass. As shown, a carbonaceous particle-pitch mass may be fed via hopper 10 into the bore 11 in the barrel B of a mixer M. The barrel may be provided with teeth 12, 12' which are circumferentially spaced and project radially inwardly and which cooperate with interrupted helical threads or blades 13 on shaft 14, which is simultaneously rotated and reciprocated. One of the teeth may be provided with a bore through which liquid coolant, e.g. water or carbon dioxide, is injected into the mass in the bore of the barrel. The latter may be provided with annular passages 9, 9a through which heat transfer fluid(s) may be circulated. The temperature of the fluid circulated through passage 9a may be less than that of the fluid passed through passage 9. The blended mass may be discharged from the barrel into a section 24 open to atmosphere in which the liquid coolant vaporises and further mixing is continued before exit through opening 28. The rate at which liquid coolant is added may be regulated according to the temperature of the blend discharged through opening 28, the temperature being measured by means of a sensor 39.
