Abstract

1287259 Change-speed control TATRA NARODNI PODNIK 7 July 1971 [10 July 1970] 31938/71 Heading F2D To provide a precisely set middle position intermediate between two extreme gear positions of a pneumatically-actuated change-speed shift-rod 5, on a motor-vehicle, thereby automatically establishing a neutral position of the gear, a three-stepped piston 4 on the rod 5 is actuated by a compound cylinder/piston assembly comprising an auxiliary piston 3 slidable in a fixed cylinder 1, which, on application of pressure to the appropriate end 13 or 14 of the outer cylinder 1 the auxiliary and stepped pistons 3, 4 are jointly moved to the appropriate opposite end of the outer cylinder, moving the shift-rod 5 to one or other of the two extreme gear positions, the grading sizes of the functional areas of the pistons 3, 4 being such that when pressure is simultaneously admitted through both inlets 13, 14 the auxiliary piston 3 is moved so that its skirt abuts one end of the fixed cylinder 1 (as shown) and the stepped piston 4 is moved so that its centre portion abuts the auxiliary piston 3 (as shown) to establish the middle, i.e. neutral, position of the gear shift-rod 5, a radial passage 16 venting the space between the pistons 3, 4 to atmosphere.
