Abstract

1286917 Packages for sterile objects PHILIP MORRIS Inc 4 Aug 1970 [19 Aug 1969] 37513/70 Heading B8C A package 10 for a sterile suture object 14 comprises an inner hermetically sealed packet 12 and an outer hermetically sealed packet 16 both of which contain a sterilizing gas under positive pressure. The packets 12 and 16 each comprise a blister 32, 18 having encircling flanges to which are sealed closure members 34, 24 closure member 34 being longer than the flange to form an opening tab 36 and one edge of closure member 24 being unsealed to facilitate opening. The sterilizing gas, which may be a mixture of about 12% ethylene oxide and 88% of an inert gas such as carbon dioxide or freon (R.T.M.), is introduced into the packet 12 containing the object 14 by tack sealing the closure member 34 to the blister 32 and subjecting this to a vacuum and then to the sterilizing gas at between atmospheric and 1 PSIG pressure when the heat seal is completed. This process is repeated for the packet 16 in which the packet 12 is disposed in an upside down position. The blisters 32, 18 are preferably of a transparent plastics material and the closure members 34, 24 of metallic foil having a layer of thermoplastics material.
