Abstract

1378140 Packging METAL BOX CO Ltd 18 Nov 1971 [23 Sept 1970] 45260/70 Heading B8C A food product is hermetically sealed in an inner non-rigid enclosure and, after sterilization, is then hermetically sealed under sterile conditions in an outer non-rigid enclosure which has a high resistance to permeation by oxygen and micro-organisms. The inner and outer enclosures may allow oxygen transmission rates of less than 2000 and 100 millilitres/square metre/24 hours/atmosphere respectively. The enclosures may be preformed containers or may be formed from sheets of material during a wrapping operation. The product may be vacuum packed within the inner enclosure and the pack thus formed may then be vacuum packed within the outer enclosure. The vacuum within the outer enclosure may then be released by the introduction of a sterile gas. This ensures that the outer enclosure does not conform to the shape of the product, thus facilitating the reading of any printed matter on the outer enclosure. The enclosures may be closed by heat sealing. Sterilization after application of the first enclosure may be by heating. More than one inner pack may be enclosed by a single outer enclosure. The outer enclosure may comprise an oxygen barrier layer of nylon, polyvinylidene chloride, polyester, cellulose or polypropylene and may also include a layer of metal foil and a layer of cellulose, nylon, paper, polyester, polyethylene or polypropylene.The inner enclosure may comprise a layer of polypropylene, nylon, high density polyethylene, copolymers of ethylene and propylene, or rubber-modified high density polyethylene.
