Abstract

1285975 Direct-injection engines; fuel injection pumps MITSURISHI JIDOSHA KOGYO K K 17 Nov 1969 [15 Nov 1968] 56223/69 Headings F1B and F1A Fuel injection apparatus for a Diesel engine provides two stage injection during start up, and single stage injection during normal operation of the engine. The apparatus comprises a reciprocating plunger pump 8α having a plunger 12 provided with an inclined crown or a step 11 and angularly adjustable by means of a rack 14. For engine starting a rack-locking means is released by depression of member 19, and rotation of a knob 18 causes the rack to angularly adjust the plunger into a position in which the step 11 is adjacent fuel inlet port 22. During starting, cam 13 rotates anti-clockwise and lobe 13α raises plunger 12 and causes the step 11 to obturate port 22 so that fuel is injected past valve 9 and into pre-combustion chamber 4 of cylinder 1 when the angle of the engine crank is within the range of 270 to 124 degrees before T.D.C. of engine piston 2. Thereafter a period of dwell and zero injection occurs, followed by a second injection caused by lobe 13b raising the plunger further when the engine crank angle is within the range of 23 degrees before T.D.C. to 2 degrees after T.D.C. Once the engine has reached a predetermined speed, a centrifugal governor 16 moves the rack 14 via a lever 15 into a position in which it causes the plunger to adjust through 180 degrees thereby moving the step 11 to a position remote from port 22 so that the latter remains open when the plunger is raised by lobe 13α, but is closed by further raising by lobe 13b. This causes fuel to be injected only once per cycle. If the engine fails to reach the predetermined speed, the knob 18 can be moved to the normal operating position to adjust the plunger. The first stage injection at starting may comprise 25 to 75% of the total fuel injected during both stages.
