Abstract

1284909 Making carbon paste SHOWA DENKO KK 3 Nov 1969 [6 Nov 1968] 53803/69 Heading C1A A carbon paste is prepared from a composition comprising a filler of coke and a binder of pitch or tar by applying direct mechanical pressure, e.g. via piston 3 and hydraulic line 4, to the composition such that substantially the whole composition is under compression and then kneading the composition e.g. with rotating blades 2, whilst maintaining the pressure on the mixture. The pressure may be in a range from 0À2 to 1À0 kg./cm<SP>2</SP>. If desired the mix may be kneaded before the process of the invention is applied. Further coke grain may be added to the mix after the pressure kneading step, and the pressure kneading step repeated. The paste may be baked at 1000‹ C. and if desired graphitized by heating at 2800‹ C.
