Abstract

1,273,755. Carbon metal composites. NIPPON CARBON CO. Ltd. 30 May, 1969 [22 April, 1969], No. 27544/69. Heading C1A. A carbon-metal composite adapted to function as a seal material is produced by grinding carbon or petroleum coke to a particle size of at most 40 micron, mixing the ground material with or without C black with a carbonaceous binder in amount of 40-50% by weight of said ground material kneading this mixture utilizing a Banbury type mixer, with an electric power of at least 1 kw. or more per kilogram of mixture, grinding the kneaded mixture to a particle size of at most 100 mesh Tyler, moulding the mixture, baking the moulded green body using a maximum temperature of 1300-1400‹ C. in a furnace to give a carbon body of bulk density in the range 1À68 to 1À79 gm./c.c., impregnating the baked body with metal or alloy in an autoclave, and continuing the impregnation until a ratio of impregnation i.e. (density of product after impregnation-density of baked product used) / (metal density) x (carbon porosity) of 80% or more is achieved, and withdrawing the impregnated body from the autoclave. The preferred metal has a m.p. of 200-1000‹ C. and may be Sn, Pb, Sb, Ag, Sb-Pb alloy, an Sb-Sn alloy, Y alloy, an Sb-Cu alloy, or a Pb-Ag alloy. The material produced by the above process is alleged to have and endurance of 10 mins or longer at 10-30 g. when subjected to an impact fatique test conducted by a vibrating machine.
