Baling-presses. - Relates to presses for baling wool &c., of the kind in which the platen is operated by a rack and pinion, and comprises the provision of rods for enabling the wool &c. to be compressed in stages, the rods being passed through one wall of the chamber into the opposite wall and serving to hold the charge in compression when the platen is withdrawn. The chamber 2 widens from the back to the front and is provided with a hinged wall; as shown, the front wall 2<a> is hinged at the bottom 2b and is secured by pivoted bars 3. The platen 7 is secured to a cylindrical rod 5 which passes through guides 6 and is formed on opposite sides with rack teeth engaging pinions 4, 4<a> on shafts 9, 9<a> which are geared together by pinions 10. The shaft 9<a> is provided with a pinion 11 gearing with a pinion 12, on a shaft 13 carrying a driving capstan 14. A detent 16, Fig. 3, engages a ratchet-wheel 15 on the shaft 13. For quickly moving the platen in either direction, there is provided a hand-wheel 21 which is geared by a chain 18 to the shaft 9<a>. Before the hand-wheel is operated, the pinion 12 is disengaged from the capstan by moving a clutch 14a, this being effected by means of a lever 23. The compression of the wool &c. is effected in stages, the platen being withdrawn at each stage after pointed bars have been passed through holes 24 in the front and back walls to hold the wool in compression. The bars enter grooves 7<a>, Fig. 4, in the platen, the wool being prevented from entering the grooves by pivoted plates 25, held up by springs 26. When the platen rises, the plates are turned downwards by the pointed bars, referred to above, and are then returned by the springs. The wool &c. may be compressed into a sack, suspended in the chamber.
