Abstract

345,516. Feeding articles from stacks or piles. UNIVERSELLE CIGARETTENMASCHINEN FABRIK J. C. MULLER & CO., 48, Zwickauerstrasse, Dresden, Germany, April 4, 1930, No. 10820. Convention date, Jan. 13. [Class 117.] Articles produced in one machine, e.g. boxes made in a box-making machine, which are to be collected or stacked for utilization in another machine, e.g. a packeting or filling machine, are delivered by the producing machine into a bin or collector in adjacent piles by intermittent displacement of the bin which is then positioned in the work-consuming machine where the separate piles of articles are discharged by corresponding intermittent displacement of the bin. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the boxes W are carried from the box-making machine, by a feed chain 1 to a track 3 and against a stop 4. A plunger 5 actuated by a cam on a shaft 12 geared to the feed chain then pushes each box through an opening 16<1> in a table 16 into the bin 44 detachably carried by a slide 17 having depending racks 18 mounted in the table; the'bin is positioned against a stop 17<1> on the slide and each box is pushed into the bin past spring- supported lugs 47<1> which support the pile of boxes in the bin. The racks 18 engage pinions 19 loosely mounted on shafts 20 and carrying clutch members 21 engaging complementary members 22 on spring- pressed pinions 23 also loose on the shafts 20 and geared to wide pinions 26 keyed to shafts 27. A shaft 33 geared to the feed chain is connected by worm gearing with worms 28 loose on the shaft 27 and carrying cams 42 engaging rollers on levers 41 carrying pawls 40 and mounted on levers 38 loose on the shafts 27 and connected to crank discs on the shaft 33. The pawls 40 are spring-controlled to engage ratchet wheels 43 fixed to the shafts 27 and when the worm wheels 28 have made one revolution a pile of boxes has been stacked in the bin and recesses in the cams 42 allow the pawls to engage the ratchet wheels which, through the pinions 26 &c. move the bin through the width of a pile for further articles to be fed into the space behind the completed pile. The completion of the filling of the bin may be notified by a bell &c., and the bin is then detached from the slide 17 which is moved back to its original position, the clutches 21, 22 allowing this movement. At the consuming machine similar gearing is used to move the bin the width of a pile of boxes when the feed chain 54, Fig. 4, carrying the boxes into the machine has removed a pile from a vertical channel 51 into which it is dropped when the lugs 47<1> are moved from pile-supporting position by fixed cams 55 which engage rollers 56 on the lug supports 47 as each pile arrives over the vertical channel. The cams 42 at either the producing or consuming machine may constitute the driving member of a counting mechanism.
