Abstract

935,080. Baling presses. SOC. DES ETABLISSEMENTS RIVIERRE-CASALIS. May 24, 1960 [May 26, 1959], No. 18330/60. Class 94(1). [Also in Group XXIV] A press for baling straw, &c. comprises a driving shaft 2 acting through a link 3 upon a ram 4 oscillating in a channel 5, the driving shaft being connected by a chain 20 to a sprocket 17 forming the driving member of a positive one-revolution clutch automatically engaged and disengaged to drive a knotter shaft 11 and actuate needles 14. The clutch (see Group XXIV) is controlled by a link 47 sliding in a support 49 and itself slidably supporting a rack 50 meshing a pinion 53 fast with a gear 54 engaging the bales which emerge between fixed and adjustable jaws 6, 7. Rotation of the gear 54 slides the rack 50 leftwards of the Figure against the bias of the spring 51 until it engages an adjustable stop 52, further rotation of the gear 54 &c. then sliding the link 47 leftwards to turn a clutch control lever 35 and engage the one-revolution clutch. The knotter shaft 11 accordingly rotates, and a crank arm 25 fast therewith connected to a link 28 raises the latter to turn a crank 13 and operates the needles 14, simultaneously drawing the clutch control link 47 downwards so that the rack 50 no longer meshes the pinion 53. The spring 51 draws the rack 50 back to the right of the Figure, and simultaneously a spring 48 draws the clutch control link 47 rightwards, so that the clutch control arm 35 is re-positioned in the path of a projecting arm of a pawl 27 comprising the drive transmitting member of the clutch. On completion of a revolution of the shaft 11, the needles 14 are restored to the position shown, the rack 50 once more meshes the pinion 53 fast with the bale engaging gear 54, and the clutch is disengaged by abutment of the pawl arm against the clutch control arm 35 until another cycle of operations is commenced by the sliding of the control link 47. The jaws 6, 7 can be joined by means of a safety device limiting the maximum effort exerted by the compressed material while in the machine, and the jaws 6, 7 can be provided with bale retaining members 9 each having a brake 10 associated therewith.
