Abstract

1284251 Measuring torque electrically AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [13 March 1970] 12179/70 Addition to 939175 Heading G1N A torque measuring arrangement, suitable for measuring the driving or braking torque on a vehicle wheel, comprises a ring 12 bolted to the driving-shaft and a coaxial ring 11 bolted to the wheel rim 27, the two rings being inter-connected by a number of equally angularly spaced bars 15, Fig.4, disposed parallel to and radially offset from the torque axis, these bars carrying gauges e. g. resistance strain gauges 52, which respond when the bars are deflected due to the application of torque. The ring 11 is provided with spokes 13 which carry a hub 14, and a housing 29 surrounds the hub and is separated therefrom by ball-bearings 31, the housing being held against rotation by a member 49. Leads from the strains gauges 52 are carried through grooves in the spokes 13 to a terminal strip 54 from which conductors lead through a tubular member 55 in the hub 14 to a slip ring assembly 56. Bushes 58 engaging the slip rings are connected to sockets 58 of multiple-pin connectors. The resistances are connected in a bridge circuit whose output feeds an indicator and/or a recorder. Temperature compensation is envisaged. The gauges may be inductive strain gauges or deflection transducers.
