Abstract
1277245 Indicating bearing wear NIKKISO KK 3 Sept 1969 43572/69 Heading F2A [Also in Divisions G1 and H2] A device for indicating wear in a bearing of an electric motor comprises a sealed tube fixed in the bearing with a portion of the device adjacent to the shaft supported by the bearing. The tube is arranged so that it is ruptured by the shaft when the bearing has worn a predetermined amount. On rupturing the fluid content of the tube is changed and means are provided for sensing the change. The change in content of the tube may be monitored by the change in pressure, in electrical resistance, conductivity or capacitance, or in pH. The tube has a flat or conical end which comes into contact with the shaft, and the end of the tube may be received in a recess in the shaft so that it may be ruptured by both axial and radial wear. Alternatively the tube may be ring shaped and mounted around a peripheral surface or adjacent an end surface of the shaft. The sensing device may be arranged to stop the operation of the motor.
