Abstract

1283391 Ethylene copolymers MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 28 Aug 1969 [30 Aug 1968] 42785/69 Heading C3P Substantially linear, amorphous, vulcanizable, high molecular weight copolymers or terpolymers are prepared by the copolymerization or terpolymerization of ethylene with an alphaolefin and, where appropriate, with a diene, in suspension in at least one of the monomers as a liquid polymerization medium and in the presence of a catalyst which has a co-ordinated anionic mechanism and of a diluent capable of acting as a solvent for the monomers but not for the polymer that is formed. Examples describe the production of a copolymer of ethylene and propylene alone and of terpolymers thereof with methylpentadiene-1,4, methyltetrahydroindene, cyclooctadiene-1,5, ethylidene norbornene or 1,4-hexadiene. Catalysts utilized are mixtures of aluminium diethyl chloride or aluminium isobutyl sesquichloride with vanadium triacetylacetonate, oxychloride or tetrachloride, and the diluents used are propane, butane, pentane and methylene dichloride.
