Abstract

128,279. Compagnie des Forges et Acieries de la Marine et d'Homecourt. Jan. 2, 1917, [Convention date]. Ordnance design; chambers; breech mechanism. -Consists in delaying the movement of the projectile by obturating the flow of gases through a transverse diaphragm separating the charge chamber from the bore by a rigid or defarmable member which enters an orifice in the diaphragm. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the diaphragm c, provided with a hole d, separates the chamber a containing the charge e from the bore b which receives the projectile g. The hole d is partly or wholly closed by an obturating-plug h, and is attached to the base of the projectile, as shown, or is separate therefrom. In a modification, the plug is formed at the end of a stem extending from a super-calibre projectile and entering the box. Fig. 4 shows a super-calibre projectile having a sleeve surrounding the gun barrel, the diaphragm being formed at the muzzle, and the plug h being carried by the projectile. Fig. 5 shows the diaphragm and powder charge carried by a projectile which fits over a stem forming the gun. Fig. 6 shows a breech-loading gun in which the diaphragm and powder charge are carried by the mushroom head forming part of the obturator of the breech-screw.
