Abstract
125,475. Armstrong, Whitworth, & Co., Sir W. G., and Wale, C. Aug. 21, 1916 Ordnance design; chambers; breech mechanism.-Relates to mortars having combustion chambers separate from the barrels, and consists in forming a hole in the diaphragm separating the combustion chamber from the barrel, and, passing through the hole, a stem adapted to push the bomb forwards when the charge is fired. Four modifications are illustrated. In each, the barrel A is separated from the combustion chamber B by a diaphragm C having a hole D through which passes a stem E on a bomb F. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, a breech G is provided for insertion of the charge H, the breech being closed by a screw I fitted with firing-mechanism. As shown in Fig. 1, a cylinder J receives a reduced part E' of the stem E, and the propellant gases act initially upon the annular shoulder between the parts E, E<1>. As shown in Fig. 2, the stem E has two pistons E<2>, E<3> of different diameter and openings K<1> in the cylinder K allow the gases to act initially upon the pistons. A passage L, Fig. 3, in the stem E has ports M, M<1>, M<2>, and a cylinder N receives the stem. Initially the gases pass through the openings M', M; subsequently, the port M<2> is uncovered, and finally the hole D is opened. As shown in Fig. 4, the breech G is dispensed with, and the charge H, which may be attached to the stem E, is inserted through the hole D into a perforated cylinder 0, and fired through a passage P. For use with a bomb adapted to fit a rifled barrel, the barrel is slidably mounted in a ring Q and screwed to the combustion chamber. The ring Q is pivoted in brackets R. The bomb is inserted from the breech, the barrel being turned into the position shown in dotted lines.
