The reduced end of the pin fits the tapered hole E<2> in the breech, and by its inertia is stated to keep the fitting gas-tight when firing. When in the cocked position, as indicated by broken lines X in Fig. 2, the opening E<2>, together with openings F<2> in the sleeve F, provides an exit for imprisoned air or gases. The brake device, Fig. 1, may be duplicated by providing an additional ring of brake blocks adapted to engage a conical recess in a loose ring interposed between the spring and the brake blocks shown. A soft washer or rubber ring D<5>, and a fibre ring D<6>, may be interposed between the collars D<1> and the casing. The collar may, further, closely fit the casing to increase the cushioning effect.
