Abstract
1282513 Glow discharge lamps PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 Sept 1969 [19 Sept 1968] 45548/69 Heading HID In a low pressure glow discharge lamp the envelope 6 comprises transparent ceramic material 10 with an external transparent electrically conductive layer 9 forming a current supply conductor for the lamp. The material 10 may be barium titanate and the layer 9 tin oxide or indium oxide. The lamp may have a single internal electrode 12 or may have an internal layer 11 of tin oxide acting as a second electrode and together with layer 9 and material 10 forming a series capacitor. The envelope 6 has an external diameter of 3 mm., an internal diameter of 2 mm., a length of 2¢ cm. and is closed by flat or curved glass members 7 and 8. The lamp is enclosed in a sealed housing (not shown) of transparent insulating material and has a filling of neon at a pressure of 30 torr. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) a cylindrical ceramic envelope is provided with two longitudinally spaced semicylindrical internal layers forming electrodes, and two semi-cylindrical external layers covered by a transparent or reflecting lacquer coating. One of the external layers may be omitted and a current lead provided through the envelope to one of the internal layers.
