Abstract

1282263 Refining molten Al or Al alloys BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 22 Dec 1970 [9 Jan 1970] 1217/70 Heading C7D A gas mixture containing 0À5-20% vol. chlorine and at least one of argon or helium is passed into molten Al or an alloy containing more than 50% wt. Al to remove hydrogen and metal oxide inclusions. The gas may be introduced into the melt before casting via a lance or a porous plug at the end of a metal tube or fixed in the wall of the melt container. In an example a gas mixture containing argon and 5% vol. chlorine was bubbled at 57_1/min for 30 minutes through 1050 Kg of molten Al alloy containing 0.3 cc. hydrogen/100 gms, 0.75% wt. Mg, 4.3% wt. Cu and 0À8% wt. Si. The hydrogen content was reduced to 0À1 cc. /100 gms.
