Abstract

1282132 Tobacco-smoke filter CIGARETTE COMPONENTS Ltd 24 Sept 1970 [7 Nov 1969 24 Jan 1970] 54647/69 and 3563/70 Heading A2C The filter has an outer tubular member 9 and an axially extending air permeable inner member comprising an air permeable rod 1 of bonded filaments or fibres, the outer surface of the rod 1 being in engagement with the inner surface of the outer member 9 at a first position, e.g. at an end portion 2 or 2', whilst at a second position, longitudinally spaced from the first, the rod 1 is formed into a portion 3 of smaller cross-sectional area to leave a hollow space through which smoke drawn through the filter may pass. As shown in Fig. 1, the portion 3 is formed with four ribs 5, and the filter is united to a cigarette 12 by a cork tipping paper strip 15. The inner member may have only three ribs, or may take either of the forms shown in Figs. 6, 7. The Fig. 7 form includes ribs 60 and valleys 61 between a cylindrical portion 56 and a tapering portion 58. The inner members are formed by passing a bonded cellulose acetate fibre rod through a deforming device having heated crimping members. Any space between the inner and outer members may be filled with particles of filter material such as active carbon, thermoplastic foam or fine denier bonded filaments.
