Abstract
1,228,747. Cigarettes. BRITISHAMERICAN TOBACCO CO. Ltd. 29 Aug., 1968 [7 Sept., 1967], No. 40971/67. Heading A2C. A tobacco-smoking article comprises an outer wrapping 2, tobacco in an elongated annular region 1, an axial smoke-pervious core 3 capable of selectively absorbing aromatic polycyclic hydrocarbons, and a smoke-impervious tubular member separating the region 1 from the core 3, whereby the smoke from the combustion of the tobacco is drawn through the core 3, the tubular member being made of a material progressively destructible with the said combustion. As shown, a cigarette-like article includes a conventional cigarette paper wrapping 2, a sleeve of relatively smoke-impervious paper 4, and a tube of very frangible, porous, material e.g. ceramic material. An aluminium foil disc 6 and a conventional filter plug 7, and optionally a plastics flaring mouthpiece 8, are also provided. The disc 6 may be replaced by an annular plug e.g. of paper impregnated with sodium silicate solution and dried. The core 3 may comprise a support material such as calcined earth incorporating a selective polycyclic hydrocarbon absorbent such as activated charcoal, activated basic alumina, ammonium nitrate, or oxides of transition metals. Further modification of the smoke may be effected by the addition of a small amount of an alkaline salt such as sodium carbonate.
