As shown, the web 8 actuates a tachometer 23 whose output passes through controls 24, 25 and thyristor units 26, 27 to control the drive motor 28 of a pump 29 and the drive 30 of the roller 3. The output voltage of an inductive flowmeter 31, which measures the flow-rate independently of the viscosity, is fed back to the control unit 24 of the pump. The output of an inductive liquor level indicator 32 is fed to the control unit 25 of the roller 3. The quantity of liquor applied to the web may be controlled by means of a potentiometer 33.
