1281178 Liquid control in web treatments ARTOS DR ING MEIR-WINDHORST KG 22 July 1969 [24 July 1968 20 Sept 1968] 36884/69 Heading D1L In a process for treating a web with a liquid, there is associated with each unit length of web in its passage through the process a predetermined quantity of processing liquid travelling unidirectionally therewith and having initially a predetermined chemical and physical constitution, and the treatment process is so timed that substantially complete exhaustion or consumption of the processing medium takes place. The dyeing of polyester carpet is specified. Apparatus as follows may be used, in each case means being provided for controlling the web-liquid flow as above; (1) the web is passed in zig-zag over a series of rollers arranged horizontally as an upper and lower row, the lower rollers being surrounded by semi-cylindrical troughs for the liquid and having adjustable overflow elements between them; (2) the web is passed through one or more horizontal troughs which have covers or other means for regulating the depth of liquid in them; (3) the web is carried on a permeable conveyor belt, liquid being supplied from above onto the web and recycled from a collecting trough under the conveyor to the next following supply point; (4) the web may be passed through a single U-tube with controlled liquid flow. The process may be at elevated temperature and/or pressure, and the liquid may be agitated to ensure homogeneity. Flat or rope-form fabrics may be treated, the latter may be constrained to follow a sinuous path.
