Abstract

Apparatus for the liquid treatment of artificial threads comprises a series of spaced cantilevered rotatable upper and lower rolls over which the threads are adapted to pass continuously in a sinuous path, means for driving the rolls, a compartmented trough adapted to receive a treating liquid, each compartment having positioned in it one or more of the lower rolls at least partly submerged in the treating liquid, the planes of the dividing or partition walls between adjacent compartments being transverse to the plane of the path of the threads, spray means positioned adjacent the path of upward travel of the threads, and means for continuously withdrawing liquid from compartments of the trough and for conducting it to the spray means positioned above the individual compartment. Spray means are also positioned adjacent the path of downward travel of the thread and the trough is constructed to permit the flow of treating liquid through it countercurrent ito the movement of the threads being treated. As shown in Fig. 1, a tow of continuous filaments 10, e.g. of gelled polyacrylonitrile, is led over a series of upper rolls 12a-12i and lower rolls 14a-14h. The latter are com <PICT:0844625/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0844625/IV(a)/2> pletely submerged, e.g. to a depth of 1 to 3 inches, in an aqueous washing liquid 16 contained in a trough 18 divided into compartments, 20, 22, 24, 26, by means of baffles or adjustable weirs 28, 30, 32. The liquid is drawn up from the compartments 20, 22, 24, by means of the circulating pumps 34, 36, 38, and delivered through regulating valves 52a-52c and flow meters 56a-56c to the sprayers 40a-40x. The sprayers 401a-401h are supplied with pure water by gravity from the vessel 42 (which contains a heat exchange coil 46) through the control valve 52d and the flowmeter 56d. The apparatus is provided with wipers 64a-64h and 66a-66h so positioned that they touch the film of liquid carried up with the tow but not the tow itself. The wash liquid 16 in the trough 18 flows from left to right through the trough and is discharged through outlet 68 and conduit 72 to the sump tank 53. Fig. 3 shows a double-sided embodiment of the apparatus in which the upper and lower pairs of rolls are driven by gears 78 and 80.ALSO:Apparatus for the liquid treatment of threads comprises a series of spaced cantilevered rotatable upper and lower rolls over which the threads are adapted to pass continuously in a sinuous path, means for driving the rolls, a compartmented trough adapted to receive a treating liquid, each compartment having positioned in it one or more of the lower rolls at least partly submerged in the treating liquid, the planes of the dividing or partition walls between adjacent compartments being transverse to the plane of the path of the threads, spray means positioned adjacent the path of upward travel of the threads, and means for continuously withdrawing liquid <PICT:0844625/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0844625/IV (c)/2> from compartments of the trough and for conducting it to the spray means positioned above the individual compartment. As shown in Fig. 1, a tow of continuous filaments 10, e.g. of gelled polyacrylonitrile, is led over a series of upper rolls 12a-12i and lower rolls 14a-14h. The latter are completely submerged, e.g. to a depth of 1 to 3 inches, in an aqueous washing liquid 16 contained in a trough 18 divided into compartments 20, 22, 24, 26, by means of baffles or adjustable weirs 28, 30, 32.
