Abstract
1280872 Filtering apparatus MONOGRAM INDUSTRIES Inc 12 June 1969 [14 June 1968] 29778/69 Heading B1D (Also in Divisions E1 and F2] A recirculating pump type sanitary closet comprises a pumping chamber, a liquid reservoir, and a filter comprising a filter plate having at least one aperture, affording communication between the pumping chamber and the reservoir, and a needle arranged to reciprocate axially in the or each aperture, the spacing between aperture and needle determining the maximum size of particle which will pass through the filter. In the embodiment of Figs. 3 and 7, a plurality of needles 80 extending through apertures 78 in a filter plate 76 are secured to a rectangular mounting plate 84 carried by a rod 58 which is axially reciprocated by a diaphragm 48 driven in one direction by compressed air supplied by an inlet pipe 46 to a driving chamber 50 formed between the diaphragm and lower wall 42 of pump and filter assembly 30', a spring 56 being arranged in a second chamber 52 of the assembly to return the diaphragm. The liquid component of the contents of a reservoir in which the assembly 30' is immersed is drawn through the annular spaces 82 between the needles 80 and the apertures 78 and through a non-return valve 88 into the second chamber 52 upon downward movement of the diaphragm under the action of the spring 56, and is pumped via a non-return valve 72 into a pipe 70 leading to a flushing ring of the closet bowl when the diaphragm is moved upwardly by the admission of compressed air to the chamber 50. An aperture 86 through which the rod 58 passes is of a size such that a small amount of the liquid flows backwardly through the apertures 78 during the pumping stroke which assists the needles in their operation of maintaining the spaces 82 clear of solid material. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) the needles (180) are fixed and a filter cylinder (174) incorporating the filter plate (176) is reciprocated to provide the pumping action and relative movement between the filter plate and the needles. The initiation and the control of a pumping cycle for flushing the closet are effected by manual depression of the operating button of a change-over valve (see Division F2). In another embodiment, Fig. 8, initiation is by an electric switch controlling an electric motor 258 which drives an impeller 262 which reduces the pressure in the filtered liquid in chamber 252 and delivers the liquid to outlet pipe 270 leading to the flushing ring of the closet bowl, a branch pipe 246 leading to chamber 250 whereby diaphragm 248 is moved upwardly against the action of a spring 256 to operate needles 280 in filtering apertures 278.
