Abstract

1280595 Riveting; perforating NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO 9 March 1970 [2 April 1969] 11068/70 Headings B3U and B3W Metal plates 20, 24 are connected together by penetrating a punch 28 into the plate 24 so that material displaced therefrom forces a slug 32 from the plate 20 and flows into the opening 36 formed to produce an enlargement 40 on one side of the plate 20 greater in diameter than that of the opening 36. The plate 20 is positioned on a support 26 having a circular aperture 30 smaller in diameter than that of the punch 28. In another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), three plates are joined together, the intermediate plate having a preformed aperture. In an apparatus for carrying out the method, the plate 20 is seated in a recess 81 of a base 75 and stock material is placed in a recess 80 in a die 77. A shaft 89 is driven downwardly to cause an outer punch 92 to cut an element 104 out of the stock material and deposit it on top of the plate 20. During this movement of the punch 92, springs 86, positioned between a fixed plate 84 and a plate 85 connected to the punch 92, are compressed until the plate 85 contacts stops 83. Upon further downward movement of the shaft 89, springs 88 are compressed to cause an inner punch 91 to move downwardly a distance Y relative to outer punch 92 so as to connect members 20, 104 together.
