Abstract

1279720 Combustion analysis W KOCH and H LEMM 31 Dec 1969 [12 March 1969] 63427/69 Heading B1X Combustion apparatus used in gaseous analysis comprises a crucible I heated in a lower portion by, e.g. a resistor 2, and cooled in an upper portion by a cooling jacket 3. Material for analysis is introduced via tube 5 and heated whereupon any gaseous products are removed via an exit 7 in a headpiece 4 by means of a pump (not shown) and a scavenging stream of oxygen introduced via a tube 6 which also seals the filling tube 5 to air. Savenging gas may also be introduced via tube 8. The products are conveyed to, e.g. an infra red or mass spectrometer, or a gas chromatograph. A known weight of sample may be introduced. Electrodes 10, 11 of an electrostatic precipitator prevent deposition of any metallic dust on the upper cooler part of the crucible 1. The combustion and analysis may be computorised for automatic procedure. Particular application is in the analysis of carbon and sulphur and total hydrogen.
