Abstract

Pulses of organic substances issuing in a carrier gas from a gas chromatographic column are determined by providing the carrier gas before or after admission to the column with a constant concentration of oxygen, passing the oxygenated gas stream through a combustion zone and thence to a continuous oxygen analyser, whereby negative signal pulses related to the weight and formula of the organic substances are generated. The oxygen for combustion may be that already present in small quantities in the carrier gas although in high sensitivity work it may be necessary to remove part of this oxygen by dividing the stream, scavenging one branch and re-uniting the streams. The oxygen may, however, be continuously added to provide a constant concentration before or after passage through the column, e.g. by means of a constant "leak" or by passing the carrier gas through the anode compartment of an electrolytic cell. The combustion may be catalytically assisted, e.g. by means of a platinum filament, platinum plated silica wool, platinum impregnated asbestos or alumina carrying palladium.
