Abstract

1,207,671. Photo-electric gas analysis. GAS COUNCIL. Jan.4, 1968 [Jan. 4, 1967], No.481/67. Headings G1A and G1B. In determining the sulphur or phosphorus content of a gaseous or vapourized hydrocarbon sample by photo-electrically measuring the intensity of the sulphur or phosphorus characteristic omission when the hydrocarbon is burnt in a hydrogen rich atmosphere, the hydrocarbon is first burnt in an oxygen atmosphere to burn off the hydrocarbons which otherwise when the sample is burnt again at the later measuring stage would quench or obscure the characteristic omission. In Fig.2 a liquid hydrocarbon containing sulphur is pumped with a carrier gas such as hydrogen or nitrogen into a vaporizer 111 and with hydrogen added from line 116 is burnt in an oxygen rich atmosphere in chamber 101. Air or oxygen is fed into the chamber from a ring of jets 121. The combustion products are then burnt at jet 130 in a hydrogen atmosphere added at 123; oxygen for this burning passes to the jet up centre tube 131 from line 132. A photo-multiplier, covered by a filter 139 removing infrared radiation and a filter 140 passing radiation in the band 3400 to 4100 A receives the characteristic omission. The level of intensity may be recorded and an alarm operated if the level exceeds a predetermined limit. A mirror 141 is positioned behind the transparent tube 134. The apparatus may be fed with successive hydrocarbon sulphur compounds from a chromatographic column.
