Abstract

1428235 Flame photometer VARIAN ASSOCIATES 7 March 1973 [8 March 1972] 11097/73 Heading G2J [Also in Division G1] A flame photometer comprises a photodetector in combination with a burner arranged to produce a reducing flame and designed so that the sample under test is fed to a peripheral region of the flame. As shown, hydrogen fuel gas and combustion support gas i.e. oxygen are fed via control valves 28, 29 and tube 25 to flame tip member 31, which is held in position by ferrule 32 and screw threaded sample guide-member 33. The sample gas is delivered via tube 34 to pass via notches 33' into the peripheral, low temperature (400‹C), hydrogen-rich part of the flame, so that while undesired interference substances e.g. hydrocarbons, are burned inefficiently, burning of the sample is optimized. The apparatus includes igniter 14, ion collector 15, for monitoring hydrocarbons, explosion shield 43, filter 42 and photomultiplier 41 forming part of a spectrophotometer. The photometer may be used to examine the effluent from a gas chromatograph column.
