Stationary-cutter type jor cutting sheet material in direction of feed.-Consists of a machine for cutting off the marginal portions of pneumatic tyre covers. The cover G is supported on a nose-piece f<4> loosely mounted in a spindle f<1> provided with a serrated wheel F which co-acts with a bearer-wheel D to rotate the cover circumferentially and provides an edge against which a cutting- disk C shears to remove the desired material. The spindle/' is vertically adjustable in bearings e<3>, e<4> of a slide E moved horizontally to bring the work into engagement with the cutter, and is driven from the cutter spindle c<2> through gearing c<10>, f<2>. The cutting-disk C is provided with a square bore fitting a sleeve c<8>, Fig .4, keyed to the spindle c<2> and is clamped thereto by a nut c<5> and washer c<6>. The bearerwheel D is loosely mounted on this sleeve c<8>. A vertically adjustable saddle-piece is provided on the slide E to engage the edge of the cover to assist in guiding the same during the cutting operation. The slide E may be traversed by hand or power. In the latter case, the movements are effected from a cam H driven through a conical clutch, the movements of which are so controlled from a hand-lever n<6> that, on its first actuation, the slide E brings the work into the cutting position and is then stationary during the cutting operation, a second actuation of the lever being required to secure the return of the parts to their original position. In a modification, both margins of the cover may be cut simultaneously by the use of a second independently-mounted wheel F and corresponding cutter, and arranging for the movement either of the work or the cutter relatively to the other.
