Abstract

1279559 Sulphonation method METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 5 May 1970 [24 May 1969] 21657/70 Heading C2C In a process for the continuous sulphonation or sulphation of an organic compound, wherein the organic compound is sulph(on)ated with the required sulphur trioxide diluted with an inert gas in a tubular reactor in at least two stages, the organic compound is introduced into the first stage through a nozzle located substantially centrally of the tubular reactor and part of the sulph(on)ating gas is introduced around the circumference of said nozzle, another part of the sulph(on)ating gas being introduced at the end of a delaying and/or cooling zone in a second stage through another nozzle located substantially centrally of the tubular reactor, but the organic compound, the reaction product and any unreacted sulphur trioxide from the first stage being conducted around the outside of said second nozzle. The first stage preferably has the form of a Venturi. Three to five stages may be used and preferably where the number of entries for the sulphonating gas is n, less than the nth part by volume of the sulph(on)ating gas is introduced through the nth entry. The cross-section of the tubular reactor may be increased on the down-stream side of each point of entry of the sulph(on)ating gas to accommodate the increase in gas volume. For continuously sulph(on)ating different organic compounds which sulph(on)ate at different rates, the compound which is the most difficult to sulph(on)ate may be introduced into the first stage and the compound(s) that is/are more easy to sulph(on)ate introduced, according to their rate of sulph(on)ation, into one or more of the following stages. Examples sulphonate or sulphate dodecylbenzene, long chain fatty alcohols and ethoxylated fatty alcohols and a mixture of alkylbenzenes and tallow alcohol.
