Abstract
1279472 Making filters and silencers HARMO INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 Oct 1970 [30 Oct 1969] 53092/69 Heading B3A [Also in Division F1] Absorbent device comprising a chamber containing a flow tube and having a closely packed fibrous filling in the annular space between the chamber and flow tube is made by closing one end of the chamber and feeding the filling as separate fibres into the opposite end of the chamber. The fibres are packed together and around the tube by reducing the pressure within the flow tube, initially at the end nearest the closed end of the chamber and then over an increasing length of the flow tube corresponding to the increasing level of the fibres fed into the chamber. Apertured tube 23 extends vertically within chamber 20, the lower end of which is closed by flange 22. Piston 25 is an air tight fit in tube 23 which is connected by pipe 2 9 to a suction device. Fibres from hopper 21 fall into annular space 31 and are drawn into a closely packed mass by air flow through the apertures 24. Piston 25 is progressively raised so that it is always at, or slightly above the level of the surface of the fibres. When the chamber has been filled, the tube 23 is removed and replaced by a flow tube which extends beyond both ends of the chamber, that part of the tube within the chamber being apertured. The filling is retained by closing the end of the chamber with a second flange similar to 22, to form a vehicle exhaust silencer. The fibres are separated prior to being fed into hopper 21 by placing them on an endless conveyer which feeds them between a driven helically grooved roller and a counter-rotating spiked roller. The fibres are mineral wool formed from blown slag, or glass fibre. A filter is formed by closing one end of the flow tube so that a fluid passes from the flow tube through the filling into the chamber, which then forms part of the fluid flow path.
