Abstract

1278591 Electrolysis cells with rotating bipolar electrodes CUMBERLAND ENG CO Ltd 23 June 1969 [23 March 1968] 14147/68 Heading C7B An electrolytic cell for the continuous electrolysis of salt water to form hypochlorite comprises a plurality of bipolar electrodes rotatable about an axis through their centres and located between terminal electrodes. In the form shown a plurality of annular bipolar disc electrodes 22 of titanium platinized on one face and separated by spacers 23, are rigidly supported by mounting plate 11; the mounting plate 11 being attached via sleeve 7 to shaft 6 of an electric motor 4, thus providing for rotation of the bipolar electrode pack. Coplanar with the annular electrodes are discs 36 and annulae 33 of insulating material, e. g. of epoxy glass. Electolyte is supplied axially to the cell via inlet 37 and is withdrawn radially via a plurality of tangential outlets 3. Electric current is supplied to the cell via terminals 31, 32; the platinized electrode faces being anodic.
