Abstract
1310764 Electrolysis of saline solution COMPAGNIE DES SALINES DU MIDI ET DES SALINES DE L'EST and COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 23 March 1970 [21 March 1969] 13969/70 Heading C7B Apparatus for the electrolysis of saline solution (e. g. of sea water to destroy microorganisms therein) comprises an electrolysis cell with an inlet and an outlet aperture (9 and 10) Fig. 1 (not shown), parallel main electrodes 3 formed of the same material as each other (e. g. of graphite, Pt or Pt alloy), adjacent electrodes being of opposite polarities, and an auxiliary consumable Cu anode 4, the electrodes forming a plurality of parallel compartments for the passage therethrough of the saline solution, the electrodes being held by a support head 5 formed of electrically insulating material and closing the cell in a leaktight manner, and switching means for reversing periodically, during operation the electrolysis electric current (e.g. at 6 hour intervals). Thereby deposits, e.g. of Mg and Ca carbonates or hydroxides which form on the cathodes can be periodically removed. Cl 2 and Cu ions, released during electrolysis using the cell, have a sterilizing effect. Current is supplied to the electrodes by connecting rods 6 (7 and 8), Fig.1.
