Abstract

1278582 Laminates BP CHEMICALS (UK) Ltd 22 July 1969 [20 Aug 1968] 39685/68 Heading B5N. [Also in Division C3] Resins suitable for use in electrical grade laminates are produced by condensing 1 to 2À5 moles of formaldehyde with 1 mole of a phenol component in the presence of ammonia or an amine, the phenolic component comprising 1 mole of phenol and 0À05-0À4 moles of an alkyl or alkenylphenol having 2 to 12 carbon atoms in the alkyl group. The alkyl or alkenyl phenol may be prepared from phenol by a Friedel- Crafts reaction. In examples the alkyl or alkenyl phenol is (1) a mixture of o-, m- and pisopropyl phenols, (2) a mixture of o-, m-, p-ethylphenols and diethylphenols, (3) dicyclopentadienylphenol and (4) a mixture of C 8 - and C 12 -alkenyl phenols. The Friedel-Craft catalyst is (3) cone. H 2 SO 4 or (4) acidified fullers earth. The formaldehyde is formalin and the catalyst is ammonia. The resin is dissolved in industrial methylated spirit to provide an adhesive for laminating. The adhesive may also include fillers plasticizers, stabilizers and/or flame retardants. In Examples 5 to 8 sheets of Kraft paper are impregnated with the adhesive, precured by heating and laminated with further heat and pressure.
