Abstract
1,204,519. Electrical grade laminates. BP CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 21 Aug., 1968 [19 Sept., 1967], No. 42493/67. Headings B5L and B5N. Electrical grade laminates are made by condensing together, at elevated temperatures, 10 molecular proportions of phenol, 0À5-5À0 of styrene, α-methyl styrene or vinyl toluene and 5-20 of an aldehyde, impregnating or coating sheets or plies such as kraft or asbestos paper, cotton or glass fabric or wood, with the resin, allowing the volatile to volatilize, and applying heat and pressure to form a laminate. The resin may be made by first condensing phenol and the aromatic vinyl compound in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst, e.g. H 2 SO 4 , BF 3 , AlCl 3 or toluene sulphonic acid and then reacting the condensation product with the aldehyde, suitably formaldehyde, acetaldehyde or furfural, in the presence of NH 3 or an amine, preferably at 50-120‹ C. Fillers, plasticizers, stabilizers and flame retardants may be incorporated in the resin. The resin may be dissolved in an organic solvent, such as ethanol, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone or industrial methylated spirit before impregnating the sheets. The impregnated sheets may be heated, suitably at 70-170‹ C. before assembly of the laminate. The laminate may be in the form of flat sheets or round or rectangular wound tubes and may be clad with copper for use in electrical equipment.
