Abstract

1277920 Semi-conductor devices PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 26 Sept 1969 [30 Sept 1968] 47431/69 Heading H1K Grains 11 of an electronically active material are embedded in a foil 13 of insulating material such as a polyurethane in such a way that each grain projects from both surfaces of the foil, each grain consisting of a core 11 of lowresistivity material partly enveloped by a layer 12 of high resistivity material, both the core and partially enveloping layer projecting from the foil. The core may be of aluminium with a partially enveloping layer of aluminium oxide, electrodes 14, 15, 16 of copper being used to contact the oxide on one side and the core on the other side of the foil. Alternatively the core may be of iron oxide wherein some of the iron ions have been replaced by titanium ions, and the partially enveloping insulating layer is formed by oxidizing the core surface, copper again being used as the electrode and contact material. The grains may each include a PN junction, and the complete devices may be used as voltage dependent capacitors, NTC resistors or photoconductive devices.
