Abstract
127,730. Richards, E. J. W., and Kane, W. June 12, 1918. Metal-heating furnaces; roofs. - Relates to continuous furnaces for reheating ingots &c., and comprises modifications in the arrangement of the outlet flues, in the roof construction, and in the means for heating the air for combustion. Air and gas are supplied through ports 19, 21 respectively, and are ignited in the chamber 7 adjacent the bridge 22 at the end of the finishing-hearth 26. The products pass along the hearth and are withdrawn wholly or in part through ports 8 at the charging-end, or ports 9 at an intermediate position. The proportions of the gases withdrawn at the two sets of ports may be varied, as desired, by suitable dampers. From the ports 8, 9, the gases pass through the tubes 11 of a regenerator beneath the hearth, and thence through the flue 25 to the chimney. The air passes around the tubes 11, its course being lengthened by interdigitated baffles 15, and is supplied through the flues 17 beneath the hearth to the ports 19. The roof of the furnace chamber is formed with a number of steps 10.
